The first consignment of hilsa exported from Bangladesh has arrived in India on the occasion of Durga Puja. This consignment of hilsa reached Petrapol or Haridaspur border of India through Benapole border of Jessore today Thursday. Buyers can get this hilsa in Kolkata market from tomorrow Friday.

Kolkata Fish Importers Association General Secretary Syed Anwar Maqsood told Prothom Alo this evening that the Ilish-laden truck crossed the Benapole border and entered the Haridaspur border. Now there is customs work going on. At night, this hilsa will enter the wholesale market of Howrah, Sealdah, Patipukur and Siliguri. This hilsa will be found in different markets of Kolkata tomorrow.

On September 21, the Ministry of Commerce of Bangladesh allowed the export of hilsa to India. Accordingly, 2 thousand 420 tons of hilsa will be exported this year. This hilsa will go to India till October 12. Anwar Maksud said that 30 to 40 tons of hilsa should be loaded in six trucks on Thursday. Hilsa will not come from Bangladesh on Friday. The next day, Saturday, the import will start again.

Thanking the Bangladesh government for the export of hilsa, Anwar Maqsud said that the officials of Kolkata Fish Importers Association said in an application that the period of hilsa export should not be shortened. Last year, due to lack of time, the quantity of fish declared for export did not reach Kolkata. Bangladesh specified 3 thousand 950 tons for export that year, but 587 tons came.

In 2012, Bangladesh government announced ban on hilsa export to India. However, Hilsa is being sent to India on the occasion of Durga Puja for the last five years since 2019. Anwar Maksud said that 500 tons of hilsa came from Bangladesh in 2019. After that, India imported 1 thousand 850 tons in 2020, 1 thousand 200 tons in 2021, 1 thousand 300 tons in 2022 and 587 tons of hilsa in 2023 from Bangladesh.
